The development experience of B&B in Xipo and the attraction of B&B industry to college students' employment
In July 2022, interviews were conducted with an intern and a shop manager at Xipo B&B to understand the development of the B&B industry and its impact on promoting the return of university students to their hometowns and revitalising the local economy.
Development and characteristics of Xipo B&B
In terms of B&B development, after 13 years of development since the first shop in 2009, Xipo has become a B&B brand with nine shops. With a philosophy rooted in the countryside, Xipo has developed the B&B brand while working together with local residents to greatly improve the local infrastructure in the process of building B&Bs.
When recruiting staff, Xipo B&B adopts a combined local + foreign model, recruiting basic service staff from local residents and external managers and interns, helping to re-employ local middle-aged and elderly people while also providing a platform and opportunities for young people interested in the B&B industry.
In addition, local specialties, such as dried small fish, citrus and other crops, are being promoted more under the development of B&Bs in Xipo. Moreover, the B&Bs in Xipo are converted from residential houses after proper consultation with local villagers, making them more attractive to their target customers than traditional B&Bs in terms of local sentiment, and therefore have a more stable customer base and more room for pricing. In addition, in terms of deepening cooperation with local villagers and providing a good B&B experience for guests, the Xipo B&B has developed a number of special activities with a local flavour. For example, guests can visit the homes of local fishermen to buy freshly caught fish, or pick local citrus themselves.
In the case of this Xipo B&B, its biggest attraction is its location. It is conveniently located for easy access to the city and offers a taste of the waterfront. At the same time, being in an ancient town that has not been fully commercialised, staying at the B&B also provides a strong sense of atmosphere and a daily glimpse of the life of the local residents. Secondly, the design of the B&B is also a very important aspect. The original pillars and beams have been retained in the installation of modern amenities, and the furniture has been designed in the same traditional style. It is worth noting that the B&B does not have an electronic door lock, but rather a bird-shaped lock and key, further reflecting its vintage style and adding a touch of life.
The attraction of B&B industry to contemporary college students from XipoIn terms of internship opportunities, the B&B industry is uniquely attractive to today's university interns compared to the traditional hotel industry, mainly because of the different working atmosphere and management system, as well as the salary level. In addition, the fresh environment and natural scenery, which is different from that of the city, is to some extent the reason why B&Bs have become a new internship option.
The university student interviewed also mentioned that in his opinion, the Western Slope is a valuable platform. He was able to learn things from his internship that he would not have learned in the traditional hotel industry. However, after graduation, for his own reasons, he plans to return to his hometown in northern Guangxi to develop B&Bs, bringing the experience of the advanced regions of Jiangsu and Zhejiang to the poorer regions to develop the local economy. He believes that with the increasing pressure of living and employment in first-tier cities, returning to his hometown and putting down roots is an option that will give him access to more opportunities for young people who cannot afford high mortgage and car loans. Many university students from backward regions have chosen to return to their hometowns after graduation, starting from the grassroots to build up their hometowns.
On the other hand, he mentioned that the government provides interest-free loans of up to 200,000 yuan and tax breaks for university students returning to their hometowns to start their own businesses, and he also expressed his hope that the government would give more policies in favour of university students returning to their hometowns to start their own businesses, so as to help every university student who has the idea of returning to their hometowns to better realise their ambitions and contribute to the revitalisation of the local economy.
