MADE BY ORIGINALS Mirkku Kullberg, the Finnish-born Design Hotels™ Original and creative director behind Hotel St. George, has been a key figure in the fashion industry for more than two decades. As the former CEO of the iconic Finnish design firm Artek and the former head of Vitra Home at Vitra International AG, Kullberg is no stranger to blurring the lines between art, design, media, and technology, as exemplified by Hotel St. George. Her business experience has also led her to spend time on the boards of such companies as Pohjola Bank, Saga Furs, and KSF Media. ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN The landmark building that houses the hotel was built in the mid- to late 1800s. Much of the structure was originally designed by renowned Finnish architect Onni Tarjanne, best known for designing the Finnish National Theatre in 1902. While previous tenants have included the Finnish Literature Society and the first Finnish newspaper’s printing house, the building now impresses visitors with such architectural highlights as a winter garden in the courtyard, which is sheltered by a glass roof.
